Person-centred therapy. Also called Rogerian psychotherapy or client-centred therapy, was developed by humanistic psychologist, Carl Rogers in the 1940s. It is a non-directive form of psychotherapy in which the client acts as an equal partner during the therapy while the therapist remains nondirective by not passing judgements, making suggestions or offering solutions.

According to Wikipedia, person-centred therapy is a form of psychotherapy which seeks to facilitate a client’s self-actualising tendencies which is an inbuilt proclivity toward growth and fulfilment through acceptance, therapist genuineness and empathic understanding. Carl Rogers called this therapy natural human inclination “actualising tendency” or self-actualisation.

Carl Rogers developed person-centred therapy because he believed that instead of viewing humans as inherently flawed with disruptive thoughts and behaviours which require treatment, each person should be seen as having the capacity and desire for personal growth and change. The client does most of the talking in this type of therapy.

According to Carl Rogers when he talked about person-centred therapy, he said: “individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self-directed behaviour; these resources can be tapped in if a definable climate of facilitative psychological attitudes can be provided”.

Existential therapy tries to help people find answers to the big questions in their lives so that they can find meaning and truly understand their life’s purpose.

Existential therapy focuses on helping people overcome the fear of the unknown. It focuses on the concepts that are universally applicable to human existence such as death, freedom, responsibility and the true meaning of life according to Wikipedia.

Existential therapy rather than seeing depression, anxiety and other psychological problems as meaning that a person may have a mental illness, see them as natural stages which occur as a normal part of human development and maturation. It believes that people have the freedom and choice to find a high meaning in their lives and are responsible for their overall well-being.

Gestalt therapy focuses on personal responsibility and on a person’s present experiences, the effects of the environmental and social aspects of their life, and the way they self-regulate in response to situations. It is based on the idea that the growth of an individual is largely influenced by the environment they find themselves.

Solution-focused Therapy

Solution-focused therapy. Also called solution-focused brief therapy is a form of psychotherapy which is more focused on finding a solution rather than problem-solving. This is usually a goal-oriented therapy which does not place emphasis on the symptoms or issues which may have caused a person to seek therapy in the first place.

In solution-focused therapy, people are encouraged to create a vision of the future they desire while their therapist offers them needed support to help them determine the skills, resources and abilities they need to achieve their envisioned future.

Solution-focused therapy helps people who are going through difficult times find helpful tools to cope with challenges as it is grounded in the belief that most people already possess the skills they need to create a change in their lives but often need some expert help in identifying and cultivating those skills.

Solution-focused therapy unlike other forms of psychotherapy focuses more on a person’s current circumstances and future hopes rather than on past experiences causing problems at present.

The method used in integrative therapy is integrating different psychological approaches or psychotherapy techniques and practices and using them in different ways based on what is best suited for the client.

Integrative therapy is a more flexible form of psychotherapy that incorporates multiple psychological approaches during therapy sessions in a bid to use the method that is best suited for the client. It is an integration of elements from the different schools of thought of psychology.
